Searching for periods in X-ray observations using Kuiper’s test. Application to the ROSAT PSPC archive

چکیده

We use Kuiper’s test to detect periodicities in X-ray and gamma-ray observations. Like Rayleigh’s test, it uses the individual photon arrival times, and is therefore well suited to the analysis of faint sources. Our method makes it possible to take into account the discontinuities in the observation, and to completely get rid of the contamination that results from them. This makes it particularly adapted to the search of periods long compared to the total observation duration. We propose a semianalytical approach to determine the effective number of trial frequencies when searching for unknown periods over a frequency range. This approach can be easily adapted to other tests. We show that, using Kuiper’s test, we can recover periods in frequency domains where other tests are completely confused by contamination. We finally search the entire ROSAT Position-Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) archive for long periods, and find 28 new periodic-source candidates.

We report on the progress of our search for serendipitous distant X-ray galaxy clusters in the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations archive. The initial aim of our work is to measure the X-ray luminosity function of clusters down to f lim = 4×10 −14 erg cm −2 s −1 and so test the claims of cluster evolution at moderate redshifts. We have R band images and spectroscopy for 45 extended sources detecte...

X - ray properties of the Parkes sample of flat - spectrum radio sources : dust in radio - loud quasars ?

We investigate the X-ray properties of the Parkes sample of flat-spectrum radio sources using data from the ROSAT All–Sky Survey and archival pointed PSPC observations. In total, 163 of the 323 sources are detected. For the remaining 160 sources 2σ upper limits to the X-ray flux are derived. We present power-law photon indices in the 0.1–2.4 keV energy band for 115 sources, which were either de...

X - ray Properties of the Abell 644 Cluster of Galaxies

We use new ASCA observations and archival ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) data to determine the X-ray spectral properties of the intracluster gas in Abell 644. From the overall spectrum, we determine the average gas temperature to be 8.64 −0.56 keV, and an abundance of 0.32 ± 0.04 Z⊙. The global ASCA and ROSAT spectra imply a cooling rate of 214 −91 M⊙ yr −1. The PSPC X-ray...

On The Evolution of X - ray Clusters at High Redshift

We report on the first results from a redshift survey of a flux-limited sample of X-ray clusters selected serendipitously from the ROSAT PSPC data archive. We spectroscopically confirm 15 clusters in the range 0.3 < z < 0.7, to a flux limit of ≃ 3.9 × 10 −14 erg s −1 cm −2 , over a survey area of 17.2 deg 2. The surface density of clusters in our survey is 2.0 +0.4 −0.3 deg −2 , in good agreeme...

The first positive detection of the X-ray background fluctuations at small angular scales is reported. ROSAT PSPC archive pointed observations are used to measure fluctuations at scales of 0. 03−0. 4. The pointings have been selected from an area free from galactic contamination. At separations below ∼ 0. 1 clusters of galaxies become a substantial source of the background fluctuations. The aut...
